Hmmmmm – travel and work kind of got in the way there for a while – apologies for a complete lack of anything resembling, well, any blogging or recipes.
Nevermind. I think my exquisitely beautiful new purchase is going to provide some inspiration for playing with food. What’s more, there’s a recipe for pasteis de nata in there that has my name written all over it. To the kitchen!

Hi Rachel.
Well, at the moment I’m wondering where I can get any salt cod, as about half the recipes use it (fair enough, it’s the national food of Portugal)… But then again, there is a little dessert section at the back and I’m really up for trying out the pasteis de nata
Hey Manuel.
I saw it in Eason’s on Friday and Amazon have it on offer too. I have the author’s other books and have always enjoyed them, so I just snapped this one up.
The cookbook I can’t live without? That is a good question… Erm, I can refer you to this blog post and you’ll see the problem:

At the moment, I guess it would have to be The Kitchen Diaries by Nigel Slater. The book itself is an object of beauty – paper you can’t help running your hands over, photos that make you want to lick the book and, of course, top class recipes and writing from Nigel. Oooh – this could turn into a blog post all of its ownsome!

You might get some salt cod in the enbglish market in cork, or else maybe in one of the good deli’s in Dublin liker listons on Camden st or even Carluccios. I googled it and came up with nothing at all, wonder could you do it yourself, the salting would be easy enough but wonder would it be easy to dry it?

Will have to go on a hunt for some – thanks for looking
And it would be interesting to see how easy it is to DIY. Maybe there will be some out at Howth? I’ll keep my eyes peeled and report back if I find any.

There may be, or possibly cavistons in Sandycove. Or maybe one of the Polish or Slovakian shops either

Although, truth be told, I had some salt cod in Lisbon and it was a bit of an aquired taste. It was ok at first, but there was a lot on my plate (generous portions were a feature of the trip) and I ended up feeling like I was chewing fishy leather.
But I’d still try it again
Jeffrey Steingarten’s got a great piece in his book The Man Who Ate Everything about trying something 12 times before you end up liking it.
So I’ll definitely be doing my own scientific investigating!

No salt cod in Beshoffs market in Howth I’m afraid! We were out there on Saturday. Didn’t pop into Wrights though as Beshoffs had what we were after so it could be worth a gander.

Just wanted to tell you I finally got around to making that chocolate bread and butter pudding with rum last week, and my God it was divine. It’s definitely going in my favourite recipe box. Thanks for that!

Hey Catherine.
Thanks for letting me know
The search for the elusive salt cod continues… A seaside jaunt at the weekend might be in order. Although, like I say, I wasn’t that fond of it, it’s now becoming some kind of mission to seek it out!
Hiya Sam.
Glad you enjoyed it
It’s one of my favourites – definitely in the ‘puddings I could make forever/not share with any one if I didn’t have to’ category. Which is a quite a big category, now I come to think of it.

Hi Lor.
Me too! I love a good cupcake – will definitely have to have a go a making some when I have a spare afternoon. Chockylit always has fabulous-looking ones… Delicious!
Hey Deb.
It’s certainly a beauty to look at. I’ve pretty much decided to start with the custard pastries, so if all goes well then they should appear here in the next week or two

Hi Manuel.
Kitchen Confidential is a ripping read – I’m a big fan of Bourdain’s writing style, very entertaining. I will never order fish on a Monday. Ever. And I have the Wagamama book too – Donal over at The Good Mood Food blog has also reminded me that I want to go back and make delicious noodly things…
